Official Lollapalooza Aftershow: JAI WOLF & GRYFFIN

Born in Bangladesh, Sajeeb Saha – the force behind the indie-electronic Jai Wolf project – bounced around quite a bit before finally settling in New York City. “I called Bangladesh, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New York all my home before I turned 15.”
Regardless of his changing environments, he kept his music studies consistent. “I started violin at age 5 and continued to learn until the end of High School,” says Saha. However, once he had earned his spot in the New York All State Orchestra, he felt he had gone as far as he wanted to with the violin. He wanted something new.
“Originally my parents didn’t want me to listen to anything except for traditional Bengali and classical music – they were afraid I’d lose my roots. But by the time I was a teenager, they became accepting of American music, and I began my exploration.”
In 2011, Saha started that exploration under the monicker No Pets Allowed. Within a few years, his mashups and bootleg remixes began to generate attention, quickly rising within the internet music community.
However, at the top of 2014, Saha decided to part ways with the project and start something new. “I realized I wanted to make music forever, and I didn’t want to leave my legacy with a name like No Pets Allowed. I didn’t want to be boxed into making dubstep or EDM in general. I wanted to make authentic music that would last forever.”
With the momentum generated through his previous project, Saha dove head first into the Jai Wolf project. Within the first few months, the project began to land a string of official remix opportunities throughout 2014 for established artists including Melanie Martinez, Dirty South, Alesso andODESZA – each remix landing the #1 spot on Hype Machine (an organic, internet version of Billboard’s Top 100). His biggest break came in late 2014 when Skrillex put the official stamp on one of Jai Wolf’s bootlegs.
“Skrillex has always been one of my biggest inspirations. I had messaged him the remix, but I didn’t actually expect him to hear it. Next thing I know, someone tweets out that Skrillex dropped my remix at Glastonbury festival and soon after he signs it to Owsla.”
Soon after, Jai Wolf began to perform across the country with some consistency, including a debut festival performance at Coachella.
In the summer of 2015, Jai Wolf released his debut single Indian Summer through ODESZA’s label Foreign Family Collective.
“The success of Indian Summer has been so incredibly humbling. It’s the first time I’ve created a track where I was completely true to myself.”
As of July 2016, Indian Summer has sold over 70,000 singles, has gone #1 on Spotify’s US Viral Chart and #2 on iTunes’ Electronic Chart, earned a spot on Triple J’s Top 100 in Australia, and has received national sync placements including “American Idol”, “How To Get Away With Murder” and with the NBA.
In May 2016, Jai Wolf released his follow up single, “Drive”, once again through Foreign Family Collective. In just a few weeks, the cinematic track collected over 1 million plays on both Soundcloud and Spotify.
On November 18th 2016, Jai Wolf released his first EP, Kindred Spirits through Mom + Pop music.
Saha’s journey from classical music to electronic music, and from No Pets Allowed to Jai Wolf is a compelling example of growth and success.
“It took me a while, but I finally feel comfortable making the music that I’ve always wanted to make. I feel like being my authentic self while creating music has been the reason for any of its success.”
Last year, L.A.-based producer Gryffin delivered two heavy-hitting singles that showcased his deeply melodic take on dance music. With both tracks built on a graceful fusion of indie and electronic elements, “Heading Home (ft. Josef Salvat)” shot to #1 on Spotify’s US and Global Viral charts, while “Whole Heart” (a collaboration with Bipolar Sunshine) hit #2 on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist. Also known for turning out several of the biggest remixes in recent years – including his masterly reworkings of Tove Lo’s “Talking Body,” CHVRCHES’ “Clearest Blue,” and Years & Years’ “Desire” – Gryffin recently came forth his latest original track, “Feel Good” with Illenium and Daya, and bringing his boundary-shattering artistry to bold new heights.
Originally from the San Francisco area, Gryffin began his musical journey by taking up piano at age seven. In high school he added guitar to his repertoire in addition to writing his own music for the first time. While studying electrical engineering at University of Southern California, Gryffin broadened his sonic palette by diving into the world of electronic music and teaching himself production with a downloaded copy of Ableton. “I got started during a really exciting time for electronic music – I remember thinking I’d never heard sounds like that before,” recalls Griffith, who lists the early work of artists like Skrillex and Avicii among his first influences. “It all felt so fresh and new to me, and I wanted to see if I could make music like that too.”
Toward the end of his studies at USC, Griffith started posting his original productions online and soon gained attention for his inventive sensibilities. One of his earliest releases, a 2014 remix of Ellie Goulding’s “Burn” was hailed by EDM Tunes for “evok[ing] a cosmic, almost transcendental ambience with an electric guitar backdrop and airy vocal splices,” and quickly expanded his online following. “That remix was the first time I’d used guitar in a dance music production,” notes Gryffin. “All of a sudden I had all these producers messaging me to ask how I did it, which was the moment when I realized that maybe this was a direction I should keep pursuing.”
As he sharpened his production skills and refined his vision, Gryffin pushed forward with releasing highly acclaimed remixes (including his 2014 take on Maroon 5’s “Animals,” which would eventually catch the attention of Interscope Records and lead to his signing). In late 2015 he made his stage debut at the SnowGlobe Music Festival, unveiling a dynamic performance that deftly introduced live instrumentation into the dance music format. With “Heading Home” arriving in early 2016 – and accumulating a million plays within just a week of its release via Darkroom/Interscope Records – Gryffin next embarked on his sold-out Heading Home Tour and later played major summer festivals like Electric Forest, Camp Bisco, and Firefly. Released in August, “Whole Heart” racked up more than 35 million streams on Spotify and served as the launching point for Gryffin’s biggest tour to date: the Whole Heart Live Tour, a fall 2016 trek that spanned North America.
Now set to appear at some of the world’s top tier festivals , Gryffin thrives on creating an unforgettable stage show that blurs the line between electronic music and raw live performance. Further proving the vitality of his music, several artists have taken to performing Gryffin’s versions of their own songs when playing live. And with his name referencing the mythical half-lion/half-eagle creature and its power to soar, Gryffin aims to continue instilling a potent, uplifting energy into each of his tracks. “Part of the reason I like working with piano and guitar so much is that it adds a human element that can’t be replicated – you might not even realize it as a listener, but you feel it on some deeper level,” he says. “It builds this connection that’s really powerful, and to me that ability to make music that moves people and picks them up is the most rewarding thing in the world.”
